Not every AC leak means replacement—here’s what can actually be repaired.
Not Every Refrigerant Leak Means You Need a New AC
Hearing that your air conditioner has a refrigerant leak can feel like bad news right away.
For a lot of homeowners, it immediately raises the question: Do I need a new system?
The truth is, not every leak means replacement. Some can be repaired. Some can’t. And the difference often comes down to where the leak is and the condition of the system.
That’s why an honest diagnosis matters.
Where Refrigerant Leaks Actually Happen
Refrigerant doesn’t just disappear. If your system is low, there’s a leak somewhere—and in most cases, it shows up in a few common places.
One of the most frequent trouble spots is the indoor evaporator coil. Over time, these coils can develop tiny pinhole leaks, often caused by corrosion. These leaks are hard to see and sometimes even harder to repair.
Leaks can also happen in the outdoor unit, especially in the condenser coil. Exposure to weather, debris, and age can wear these components down.
Another area we often check is the line set—the copper tubing that connects your indoor and outdoor units. Vibration over time can cause these lines to rub against something and eventually wear through.
In some cases, the issue is much simpler. Service valves, fittings, or connections can develop small leaks that are easier to access and repair.
What Can Usually Be Repaired
Some refrigerant leaks are very fixable—especially when they’re caught early and located in accessible areas.
Leaks in the line set, for example, are often repairable. If a section of copper has worn thin or developed a small hole, it can sometimes be repaired or replaced without major work.
Fittings and valves are another common repair. These parts can loosen or wear over time, and sealing or replacing them is typically straightforward.
Even certain outdoor coil leaks can be repaired, depending on where the leak is and how extensive the damage is.
The key is that the repair has to make sense—not just for today, but for the long term.
When a Repair Doesn’t Make Sense
This is where honest diagnosis really matters.
There are situations where repairing a leak is either not practical or not worth the cost.
Evaporator coil leaks are one of the most common examples. Because of how these coils are built and where they’re located, repairs are often temporary at best. In many cases, replacing the coil—or sometimes the system—is the better long-term solution.
If a system has multiple leaks, that’s another red flag. Fixing one problem won’t stop the next one from showing up.
Age also plays a role. Older systems, especially those using outdated refrigerants, can be more expensive to repair and maintain. At a certain point, investing in repairs doesn’t make as much sense as putting that money toward a newer, more reliable system.
Why “Topping Off” Refrigerant Isn’t a Real Fix
Sometimes homeowners are told their system just needs more refrigerant.
While that might get things cooling again temporarily, it doesn’t solve the real problem.
Refrigerant doesn’t get “used up”—if it’s low, there’s a leak. Adding more without finding the source is only a short-term fix—and often leads to bigger issues down the road.
A proper repair starts with finding the leak and understanding what caused it.
